New Horizons - How was it created?
In December 2007 a cluster partnership was formed between Garibaldi College, Heatherley Primary School and Holly Primary School. As a cluster we applied to become part of the British Council's Connecting Classrooms with Africa project. In April 2008 we were informed that the cluster application had been successful. From the 4th to 7th July 2008 James Griffiths from Garibaldi College attended a conference in Belfast as representative for the cluster and met with representatives from 16 African countries. At the end of the conference a partnership was formed between Garibaldi, Heatherley and Holly and 3 schools in Senegal and 3 schools in Tanzania.

We have now agreed to work in partnership over the next 3 years on the following themes:
-
Culture
-
ICT
-
The Environment
-
Staff/Student Exchanges
The name New Horizons was created to represent the exciting opportunities that lie ahead for all the people involved in the project. This site will be used to share the work of the students in all 3 countries.

During the day Year 8 students learnt about the history, education systems, cultures and foods of England and Senegal. They also had workshops learning how to drum and dance the Senegalese way. As well as being open to Year 8 the day attracted staff and students from across the college. When Garibaldi students had gone home for the day 100 students from Heatherley and Holly Primary Schools visited Garibaldi and learnt to drum and dance also. A great day was had by all.

| 5 | Joint Curriculum Project Year 2
The Environment
Commencing in April 2009 the New Horizons partnership will be working on a joint curriculum project related to the environment. In particular students will study about Climate Change in Geography and alternative forms of energy in Science. The schools will also be introducing a waste management program that will focus on recycling waste and keeping the school environment tidy. Furthermore as part of our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint each school in the partnership will plant 5 trees for every international flight they embark on. Currently we will be planting 30 trees to take account of the return flights taken by the representatives from England, Senegal and Tanzania to Belfast this July. |

| 6 | A Tree for the Future
One of the main requirements of the partnership is to reduce the carbon footprint of the partnership schools. Mr Snowdon and the Science Department have been allocated an area at Garibaldi College to grow plants and trees. Below are a selection of photos from the tree planting ceremony.
